THE STORY WAS THIS
mutants are a thing, they have been for years. superheroes, supervillains, quirky little boarding schools dedicated to raising mutant kids in safety - these are all also things. unfortunately, the current President of the United States capitalised on a whole decade of highly volatile (and often violent) anti-mutant feeling with an unforgiving pro-human stance. his - and his private army's - view is that mutants are lesser creatures, abominations and barbarians, that are pretty much only good for being enslaved. WHAT A NICE GUY. President Marcus Crassus also happens to be the richest man in America and CEO of Romans, Inc, a giant multinational corporation with its own huge private army that just so happens to be the sole manufacturer of gross emotion-suppressing robot brain implants. YEAH.

now, America is a totalitarian dictatorship under the rule of President Crassus and his army. any free mutant who takes a stand against his rule faces being hunted down and arrested and experimented on or some shit until they agree to take the implant and join Crassus's side. as well as his army of run-of-the-mill normal human soldiers, any mutants who take the implant are assigned in to his own private hitsquad used to track down the renegade mutants still on the loose.

everything is grim and dark and for some reason cities are more like wastelands as Crassus ransacks his way through America on the search for renegade mutants. fullscale riots and clashes between Crassus's soldiers and rebellious mutants happen a lot! there are a bunch of abandoned buildings and cool burnt-out warehouses are everywhere. it's just really grim and dark, you guys.

AU of an AU
this is all loosely based on the What-If Wednesday from xi-rpg circa 2010. cr can be brought forward from the old version but this is essentially an au of that au so clean slates/do-evers are a thing. if you're a newcomer then don't sweat it - all you need to know is on this page. comment below with any questions!

SO WHO'S WHO?

john buchanan ( ex-microchip-ee, rebel )

j. buchanan, mutant (TELEPATH)
★ as british as they'll ever get, 36 y/o. as far as mutant lives go, john has had a pretty chilled one for the most part. he was just lucky in that he had enough determination to control and streamline his telepathy from a pretty young age, and by the time he went to university he could easily pass himself off as a regular human and what have you. less a matter of shame and more a thing of convenience.
★ landed a job with minvera technologies in their pr team after years of drifting about all over the place. actually really enjoyed it as far as jobs go, got rather close to this guy down in the actual technological part of it (no prizes for guessing who this individual is). this guy who may or may not have basically invented those awful goddamn microchips. anyway john ended up amongst one of many working for the company who ended up at the mercy of these microchips for an extended period of time.
★ something about his telepathy, however, helped john snap himself out of it and end up pretty much clawing the chip out of his own head and suffering a great deal of blood loss and gaining a gnarly scar under his hair before he ran off to join the rebellion. what basically happened was that while john externally responded to the effects of the chip his personality split into two and his head kept whizzing around with his normal thoughts while his body wouldn't react to it up until the point where it finally did.
★ moderately traumatised by the whole thing in terms of the fact that he basically lost his own free will for a period of time and y'know it's hard to take, being a big personality kind of person who is being forced into subservience and such. is on limited duty as a rebel at the moment, mostly bc he is slightly out of sync with his telepathy and desperately trying to even it out again.
