OOC: info!

THE STORY WAS THIS
mutants are a thing, they have been for years. superheroes, supervillains, quirky little boarding schools dedicated to raising mutant kids in safety - these are all also things. unfortunately, the current President of the United States capitalised on a whole decade of highly volatile (and often violent) anti-mutant feeling with an unforgiving pro-human stance. his - and his private army's - view is that mutants are lesser creatures, abominations and barbarians, that are pretty much only good for being enslaved. WHAT A NICE GUY. President Marcus Crassus also happens to be the richest man in America and CEO of Romans, Inc, a giant multinational corporation with its own huge private army that just so happens to be the sole manufacturer of gross emotion-suppressing robot brain implants. YEAH.

now, America is a totalitarian dictatorship under the rule of President Crassus and his army. any free mutant who takes a stand against his rule faces being hunted down and arrested and experimented on or some shit until they agree to take the implant and join Crassus's side. as well as his army of run-of-the-mill normal human soldiers, any mutants who take the implant are assigned in to his own private hitsquad used to track down the renegade mutants still on the loose.

everything is grim and dark and for some reason cities are more like wastelands as Crassus ransacks his way through America on the search for renegade mutants. fullscale riots and clashes between Crassus's soldiers and rebellious mutants happen a lot! there are a bunch of abandoned buildings and cool burnt-out warehouses are everywhere. it's just really grim and dark, you guys.

AU of an AU
this is all loosely based on the What-If Wednesday from xi-rpg circa 2010. cr can be brought forward from the old version but this is essentially an au of that au so clean slates/do-evers are a thing. if you're a newcomer then don't sweat it - all you need to know is on this page. comment below with any questions!

SO WHO'S WHO?
comment below and stuff, go on

CAESAR - bad guy!!, soldier, professional bastard

[personal profile] bloodcloak 2014-04-13 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)

caesar, soldier of crassus
★ one of crassus's redcloaked human soldiers, hunts down renegade mutants, seems to take a considerable amount of pleasure in his duties. essentially president crassus' right hand man.
★ there's a rumour going around the rebel mutants that caesar might not actually be 100% human, and that he's either had a microchip of his own or he's had a liiiittl bit of supersoldier serum. he's just that hardcore HE CAN'T POSSIBLY BE HUMAN YOU GUYS
★ spent a few months undercover in a rebel cell and very nearly had the entire group microchipped. it's a sore point with some of them. just ask that spartacus rebel guy.

combeferre ( doctor, rebel, tl;dr i'm sorry )

[personal profile] bettering 2014-04-13 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)

é. combeferre, mutant (LIE DETECTION)
★ french-british (although he has been living in the US since just before crassus came to power), 31 y/o, acting head of immediate medical attention for rebel forces (and for non-rebel forces, if they happen to be left wounded on "enemy" ground)
★ has spent many years working alongside médecins sans frontières all around the world until he eventually took the comparatively banal post of school doctor at the xavier institute around the same time as enjolras having done a lot of research into the effects of modern medicine on mutants/unusual side effects as a student, and kids get into lots of trouble and hurt themselves okay.
★ upon enjolras' imprisonment and the outbreak of conflict, he set himself up with some other medically trained mutants and non-mutants in the basement of an abandoned hotel in order to run a secret clinic for casualties. he operates a non-discriminatory policy that rubs enjolras up the wrong way, and tends to all wounded that are brought to him, regardless of what side they're on. the other levels of the hotel also act as a small refugee camp.
★ has a fascination with moths, but is not the elusive supervillain dr. moth as customs once suspected he was. that's in the past now. also his power is super useless all he can do is tell that you are lying if you are, though he cannot divine the truth, just ask for it and make sad eyes until you're honest.

MAX "HOTSPUR" SOUTHEY - superhero, rebel

[personal profile] zooms 2014-04-13 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)

"HOTSPUR", superhero mutant (FLYING BRICK)
★ was a pilot in the South African armed forces before he "came out" as mutant!!
★ enjoyed a lot of success as a real saving-a-kitten-from-a-tree kinda hero, very public, shit tons of good press, retired from being an active pilot to instructing military jet pilots because it's SO USEFUL to have your instructor fly alongside you when you're taking your first fighter jet out for a spin!
★ when Shit Hit The Fan in the US he pretty much emigrated over to help fight the good fight and has been helping to move people and pass messages around the country. as well as the usual fighting shit.

Nasir - rebel

[personal profile] calledmenasir 2014-04-13 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)

Nasir, rebel (Molecule Acceleration)
★ Nasir is 21 and an American of Syrian descent. His parents died when he was young and he and his older brother were separated and went into the foster care system.
★ Nasir had managed to keep his mutant powers a secret, even from his foster parents. After losing control, the rebels found him. He was reluctant to join at first but after the other effects of his abilities manifested (blowing one of Crassus’s men up), he joined the rebels. Since then he’s become devoted to the cause and Spartacus. He basically does whatever they ask him.
★ He doesn’t have fine control over his ability to explode things so he tends to use his speed powers instead, for fear of blowing up everyone in a 30 foot radius. He’s working on it.
★ He’s pretty trusted with the rebels, on account of saving Spartacus’s life once (they forgave him from getting a lot of punches in in rapid succession when they first met). But he doesn’t plan or give advice on anything. He’s just a follower and a very good one at that.
★ He really hates Caesar. He wants to punch his face in a lot and then blow him up for good measure.

so yeah Agron is totally superstrength. because then they pretty much match. and because of the aforementioned capacity for fluff when Agron is afraid of hurting Nasir and... Nasir... is afraid.. of blowing Agron up......

I hope Castus's superpower is a reinforced face because he is gonna need it

Interesting superproblem sex was one of the first things I thought of ngl

With Castus's muscles he could easily have invulnerability as a superpower. He's going to need that.

Superproblem sex is the best.

"I don't want to hurt you."
"I don't want to blow you up."
"Yeah, we're gonna have some problems here."

[personal profile] quarrels 2014-04-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
my god that would be agron's #1 most frustrating thing ever: punching something (generally a favoured approach to all problems) but nothing actually breaking. castus is doomed to forever piss agron off no matter what he does even if it's just taking a punch and not having the decency to bleed a bit

GOD NASIR you already have your work cut out

and hm gannicus would probably need invulnerability too. mostly for all that booze. he'd need a super liver, at least.

Re: Nasir - rebel

[personal profile] calledmenasir 2014-04-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And Castus keeps flirting with Nasir too. Agron will hate him so much and Nasir is just trying to keep them from getting into a fight that ends with Agron passing out from exhaustion.

See, Gannicus's super liver means that he gets tipsy but never drunk so he's constantly drinking to see if he can manage it just this once.

Re: Nasir - rebel

[personal profile] quarrels 2014-04-20 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
And unfortunately that handy invulnerability makes castus the perfect partner for nasir which of course agron will realise and ANGST WILL ENSUE because nasir should totally be with somebody he isn't going to blow up

oh god that's gannicus's grimdark: all the internal torment with no way of getting drunk enough to forget about it for a while.

Life is never fair for Gannicus.

NOPE SORRY NASIR he's gonna break up with you for your own good then run off on a suicide mission and nearly get crucified microchipped, because Agron has the WORST IDEAS.

castus is super hot though not that agron would admit it

Re: Nasir - rebel

[personal profile] calledmenasir 2014-04-20 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
God damn it, Agron. You and your stupid ideas break Nasir's heart. If he must break it off, he'd better do it gently though. Nasir might accidentally blow things up.

Castus is the hottest man on the show and no one can convince me otherwise. It's O.K. though, Nasir totally thinks Agron's hotter.

john buchanan ( ex-microchip-ee, rebel )

[personal profile] mindblows 2014-04-13 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)

j. buchanan, mutant (TELEPATH)
★ as british as they'll ever get, 36 y/o. as far as mutant lives go, john has had a pretty chilled one for the most part. he was just lucky in that he had enough determination to control and streamline his telepathy from a pretty young age, and by the time he went to university he could easily pass himself off as a regular human and what have you. less a matter of shame and more a thing of convenience.
★ landed a job with minvera technologies in their pr team after years of drifting about all over the place. actually really enjoyed it as far as jobs go, got rather close to this guy down in the actual technological part of it (no prizes for guessing who this individual is). this guy who may or may not have basically invented those awful goddamn microchips. anyway john ended up amongst one of many working for the company who ended up at the mercy of these microchips for an extended period of time.
★ something about his telepathy, however, helped john snap himself out of it and end up pretty much clawing the chip out of his own head and suffering a great deal of blood loss and gaining a gnarly scar under his hair before he ran off to join the rebellion. what basically happened was that while john externally responded to the effects of the chip his personality split into two and his head kept whizzing around with his normal thoughts while his body wouldn't react to it up until the point where it finally did.
★ moderately traumatised by the whole thing in terms of the fact that he basically lost his own free will for a period of time and y'know it's hard to take, being a big personality kind of person who is being forced into subservience and such. is on limited duty as a rebel at the moment, mostly bc he is slightly out of sync with his telepathy and desperately trying to even it out again.

ISAAC MOORE - sir not appearing in this film

[personal profile] powerabuse 2014-04-13 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)

isaac moore, mutant (TECHNOPATHY)
★ NPC
★ I'm not actually playing him, but he's here lurking in the background
★ so this is the guy that originally designed those pesky microchips for a company called Minerva Tech
★ except they were supposed to be something else entirely and definitely not used for oppressing mutants
★ then Crassus bought Minerva Tech
★ oppression happened
★ whoops Isaac you fucked up

DAMIEN SCOTT - covert ops superhero, NPC

[personal profile] fuuckmee 2014-04-13 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)

damien scott, superhero (HE'S WOLVERINE)
★ NPC
★ part of a dynamic duo (his better half being Stonebridge, a British supersoldier and basically his big ol' muscley wife)
★ ex-Delta, ex-CIA assassin, elite as fuck covert-op superheroing, grizzled past after being framed for a crime he didn't commit, did a shit load of underground cage fightin' before being asked to team up with Stonebridge to save the world a billion times over
★ if you guys don't get your asses in gear and assassinate Crassus then Scott and Stonebridge are gonna be that endgame so hurry up

SOPHIE GAUER - human, rebel

[personal profile] technie 2014-04-13 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)

sophie gauer, rebel human ( THE NERD )
★ daughter of a mutant and a human, when her father was taken from her because of his powers her mother and her tried everything to get him back but to no avail. roman, inc. wanted to hire her mother, a well known scientist, but she refused. because of that, her mother was taken prisoner but not before instructing sophie to find the rebels and join them.
★ while she did not inherit any powers from her father, she did have her mother's natural aptitude for computers. a bit of a nerd, she has volunteered to be part of a lot of missions because of her human status. she can sneak in with less problems than a mutant and rarely attracts attention to herself. usually, she carries hi-tech equipment to hack into surveillance cameras and send the feed to her room so she can help monitor the missions.
★ because she's a little bitter about her parents, she partially blames the rebellion and so she has a weird, complicated relationships with most mutants because they can do anything "without the struggles humans have to go through. she resents them slightly, but isn't against them in the slightest; she thinks it's a disgusting thing crassus is doing for no person should be persecuted because of something they were born with.
★ she's not the cleaning crew, she isn't the chef and she isn't your mother. she helps monitoring missions and fixes equipment or gets them fancy accessories to help them on their missions. don't ask for her to cook or clean. she will cut you.
★ she will, however, cut your hair.

ava ballantyne → mutant (but not one of THOSE mutants)

[personal profile] patrician 2014-04-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)

ava ballantyne, secret mutant (EMPATH)
★ from one of those rich as fuck old new york families (THINK THE ASTORS). blond, pretty, grossly privileged, aaaand also a mutant. her parents are precisely the kind of hypocritical people to oppose the ~mutant menace~ in public but keep their daughter's "affliction" strictly on the DL, and ava was sharp enough to keep her powers hidden--although it helped that they weren't terribly flashy to begin with.
★ currently a law student at columbia and an informant (although not a member) of the rebellion. her family is well-connected and she's good at getting people to talk to her, so she's in a position to help pass along a lot of sensitive information....... and it helps that her power very literally lets her get rid of peoples' suspicions. including her parents'. you're welcome, rebellion.
★ kind of regina george-y, not so good at relating to the actual members of the rebellion because she feels like they don't have much in common beyond being mutants (ironically, given her powerset). but whatever, she's helping, right?
★ also she has some split ends because this is grimdark and totalitarian dictatorships are interrupting her kérastase deliveries okay LIFE IS HARD, IT'S THE WORST.

"RAIDER" - mutant, microchip

[personal profile] deathsparrow 2014-04-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)

"raider", crassus mutant soldier ( MACHINE SYMBIOSIS )
★ nothing is known about her past as her file is CLASSIFIED; she doesn't remember it herself nor cares to, as her memories are suppressed by the microchip in her brain.
★ viciously loyal to crassus and his generals. especially to ceasar. she is sometimes referred to "the dog" or "the hound" because of her unquestioned loyalty and the fact that she does whatever crassus and caesar command, no question asked.
★ relatively new to the troops, she doesn't like to talk to people unless necessary. she prefers to be in the company of machines, raiders and centurions; she is able to control them with her mind, although not all at once. she can also "speak" to them, though not necessarily override their orders, though they do seem to "connect" with raider. she's also able to transform herself into a raider.
★ black and white view of the world, where the rebels definitely fall in the category of being in the wrong. doesn't seem to have much of a will for herself, alike the machines she controls.
